Licence and updates

Three machines per key, releasing a seat, and how signed updates arrive.

One licence key covers the Mac and Windows builds and activates up to three machines you own or control. The key is checked against the licence server on volatlas.com, then the app runs from the stored answer and keeps working offline between checks. Updates are included for the life of the product and arrive signed, through Settings, only when you ask for them.

Activate a machine

With no key stored, the app opens on the Activate your copy screen and nothing else is reachable until activation succeeds. The steps for a first install are in Install and activate.

  1. Copy the key from your purchase email.
  2. Paste it into LICENCE KEY, or press Paste key to read it off the clipboard. If the clipboard holds nothing shaped like a key, the app says No licence key on the clipboard.
  3. Press Activate this machine or Enter. The button reads Activating… while the server answers.

Activation sends the key and a machine label to the server. The label is made once per computer and kept, so releasing and reactivating the same machine shows up as the same machine in your seat count. The full key is never shown again in the app. Settings shows only its first and last four characters.

Three machines per key

A key holds up to three active machines at once. Activating a fourth fails with a refusal ending in limit_reached. To move the licence to a new computer, release a seat on one of the others first.

Release this machine

  1. Open Settings and find the Licence block.
  2. Press Release this machine. The button changes to Really release it?
  3. Press it again to confirm. The app returns to the activation screen.

Release tells the server first and drops the local licence only once the server has freed the seat. If the server cannot be reached, release fails with an error and the machine stays licensed, so a seat is never lost to a dropped connection. If the server no longer knows the seat, the local licence is dropped anyway. Release a machine before you wipe or sell it. A machine you can no longer open still counts against the three, and freeing that seat means writing to support@volatlas.com with the key.

Working offline

Launch reads the stored answer, not the network, so the app opens without a connection. The Licence block in Settings shows the Key hint and when it was Last confirmed.

Age of the last confirmationWhat the app does
Under 72 hoursOpens with no network call.
72 hours to 14 daysOpens at once and rechecks in the background.
9 to 14 daysAlso shows N days of offline running left. Any check resets it. in Settings.
Over 14 daysOpens on Check in to keep going until one check passes.

Press Recheck now in Settings to confirm early and restart the 14 days. On the Check in to keep going screen, press Check in once you are online, or Use a different key to activate with another key.

A confirmation dated in the future buys no time. A clock moved backwards, or an edited licence file, sends the app straight to the check in screen.

When a check fails

Errors from the licence server end in a reason. Some end the licence on this machine, others leave it alone.

ReasonMeaningStored licence
not_foundNo licence with that keyRemoved
inactiveThe licence or this seat is not activeRemoved
expiredThe licence has run outRemoved
disabledThe licence has been disabledRemoved
wrong_productThe key belongs to a different productRemoved
limit_reachedAll three seats are takenKept
serverThe licence server could not answerKept
networkThe licence server could not be reachedKept

The licence routes are rate limited per address. A limited request answers server, which the app treats as a failed call and not as a verdict on the key. If activation keeps refusing a key you bought, write to support@volatlas.com with the key.

Lost key

The key is in the receipt emailed at purchase. The page you land on after checkout also shows it for seven days after the order. Past that, the page points back to the receipt.

Updates

The app never checks for updates on its own. The Updates block in Settings shows the installed version under Volatlas and not checked under Available.

  1. Press Check for updates. Available then reads up to date or the new version number.
  2. If a version is offered, press Install followed by the version. Progress shows as Downloading and a percentage.
  3. Press Restart to finish.

The app reads its update manifest from volatlas.com/updates/latest.json, one file served to every buyer with no licence check, and installs a build only if its signature matches the public key compiled into the app. A download or signature failure shows as an error in the block and leaves the installed version as it was. Quote the version shown there if you write in about a problem.

Refunds

Write to support@volatlas.com within thirty days of purchase for a full refund, no reason needed. Price and what the licence includes are on pricing. The licence covers the app only. Market data is billed by your vendor, and the data cost calculator prices a window before you pull it.
