Compared with Option Alpha
An Option Alpha alternative with no ticker list
Volatlas is the research half on its own, bought once and run on your Mac. The underlying is whatever your data vendor sells, and every contract is charged commission on top of a fill that crosses part of the spread.

Which to pick
Where Volatlas lands
- You want a root outside the five their backtester carries.
- You test uncovered shorts, strangles or the wheel and want Reg T charged against them.
- You want history further back than three years.
- You want commission charged per contract rather than folded into a slippage number.
- You map a parameter grid rather than compare four runs at a time.
- You work on a Mac.
Common questions
Switching and setup
- Is Option Alpha free?
- It is $0 a month if you hold a qualifying Tradier account at a $5k minimum balance or a TradeStation account at $10k. Otherwise the Pro plan is $99 a month billed annually or $149 month to month. What the free path buys is their backtester, five tickers over three years with a slippage input and no commission field.
- Why does the commission difference matter?
- A 0DTE iron condor is four contracts in and often four out, so commission is a fixed drag that scales with how often you trade rather than with how wide the market is. Folding it into a slippage number ties the two together, and they move independently.
- Can I test the wheel or an uncovered short?
- Yes. Volatlas charges what a broker would hold against the position, Reg T uncovered rules included, and an entry the account cannot carry is skipped and counted rather than filled for free.
- What does the data cost on top of the licence?
- On Databento a year of 1-minute SPX weekly quotes runs about $263, plus about $8 of contract definitions, metered and billed to your own account. ThetaData starts at $40 a month for four years of history and is cancel-anytime.
- Does Volatlas run bots?
- No. You build, test and sweep in Volatlas and trade wherever you already trade, Option Alpha included.
